DigitalFish History

DigitalFish was founded by Pixar veterans Dan Herman and Mark Oftedal to pursue the dream of democratizing animation by introducing a wholly new method for digital creation, based on techniques borrowed from traditional (hand-drawn) animation, that would be intuitive enough to empower both creative professionals and consumers without art training. By late 2000, an energetic following had formed around our early technology demos and, bolstered by broad encouragement, we made the decision to develop Reflex as a product.

Our first major sale was made in September 2005 to top U.S. animation school California Institute of the Arts to replace Maya, the market-leading product, first across their Freshman animation program and later for their Senior-year program as well. Since 2005, Reflex has been used at animation and fine-arts schools in the US and Asia and within film and game studios in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and India. To date Reflex has been available only via direct educational or enterprise sales, however we are preparing for broad release of a single-user-license professional/prosumer version as well as a lower-end hobbyist version with support for Apple's iPad.

From our beginning, we have believed that a vibrant consulting practice was synergistic with our product offerings. In the past several years we have worked at growing our consulting business both in size and breadth, beyond film and game studios to other areas within digital media. Today we are building a substantial consulting practice across M&E while maintaining a focus on digital media and remaining true to our vision of democratizing media production.
